His Divine Grace
A.C. BhaktivedantaSwami Prabhupada
Abhay Charanaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada (1896–1977) is widely regarded as the foremost Vedic scholar, translator, and teacher of the modern era.
He is especially respected as the world's most prominent contemporary authority on Bhakti-Yoga - devotional service to the Supreme Person, Krishna - as taught by the ancient Indian Vedic scriptures. He is also the founder-acharya of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON).
At the age of 69, he came to America in 1965 with just a few dollars and a trunk of Bhagavatam books. Within twelve years, he had circled the globe fourteen times, established over 100 temples and farm communities, and initiated thousands of disciples worldwide.
Our Teachings
The Three Pillars
Bhakti
Devotional Service to Krishna
Bhakti refers to devotion and intense love towards a personal god, and in the case of Krishna, it involves a deep and loving connection with Him.
Bhagavad Gita emphasises the path of devotion (Bhakti-Yoga) as a powerful means to attain spiritual liberation - accessible to all, regardless of background or learning.
Practicing Bhakti means engaging all one's senses in the service of the Lord - through chanting, hearing, worshipping, praying, and remembering Krishna at all times.
Yoga
Union of the Individual Soul
Lord Krishna also imparts teachings on the path of Yoga in the Bhagavad Gita. The term 'Yoga' in this context refers to the union of the individual soul (Atman) with the universal consciousness (Brahman or the ultimate reality).
Bhakti-Yoga - the yoga of devotion - is considered the highest form of yoga in the Vaishnava tradition, leading directly to love of God.
Through regular Japa meditation (chanting of the Hare Krishna Mahamantra on beads), practitioners purify the mind and draw nearer to Krishna.
Dharma
Righteous Duty and Moral Order
Lord Krishna, a significant figure in Hinduism, is associated with the concept of Dharma, which refers to righteous duty and moral order.
In the Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita, Krishna imparts spiritual wisdom to the warrior Arjuna, emphasising the importance of following one's Dharma - acting rightly according to one's position, stage of life, and ultimate spiritual nature.
Dharma in ISKCON also encompasses community service - feeding the hungry (Anna Daan), educating children, and supporting the broader spiritual wellbeing of society.
Disciplic Succession
Guru Parampara
ISKCON follows the Guru parampara (disciplic succession) of the Brahma-Madhva-Gaudiya Sampradaya - an unbroken chain of spiritual knowledge from Lord Krishna Himself.
